ナマケモノは、南米の熱帯雨林地方に住み、『セクロピア』という 木の葉を常食としています。この葉は、強い毒素を持っていますが、 ナマケモノは長い時をかけて、この食事を少量食べるだけですむように 体を適応させてきました。
葉に毒素があるために、他の動物が食べないこともナマケモノにとっては 好都合なのです。葉の毒素を分解するには、かなりのエネルギーを消耗する ので、活動のためのエネルギーを低くおさえることが必要となり、 あまり動かない毎日をおくるようになったわけです。
食べた葉を消化し、便として排出するための期間はなんと５０日。 それほど食べ物をエネルギーに変える速度が遅いので、 体温を一定に保つのがむずかしく、さらに雨の日などは体温が上がらない こともあって葉を消化できずに餓死することもあります。 また、葉を間違って食べると、消化機能が悪くなって栄養不足に なることもあるなど、お気楽そうに見えてかなり厳しい毎日。
ナマケモノがよく動く働き者になると、消化が進まずに死につながる ので、命がけでなまけているともいえるでしょう。
